Job Description

Zambia Sugar Plc. is an ABF Sugar Company is the leading Sugar producer in Zambia. Its main activities are the growing of sugar cane, the production and marketing of sugar and other sugar downstream products.
The company invites applications from suitably qualified and experienced persons to fill the following position under Estate Support Services Department.

POSITION: HANDYMAN FITTER ×1 PERMANENT

The position reports to the Water Services Supervisor. The successful candidate will be responsible for the following:

KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS

  • Ensure that mechanical fitting tasks within potable water treatment plants are completed on time by effectively planning, organizing, and executing daily activities while meeting project deadlines and maintaining required quality standards.
  • Deliver high-quality mechanical installations and repairs on potable water treatment systems including pumps, pipelines, valves, filtration units, and dosing systems by adhering to technical specifications, maintaining cleanliness, and performing thorough inspections to prevent rework or compliance issues.
  • Strictly follow health, safety, and hygiene protocols applicable to potable water environments, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and adherence to contamination control procedures, to ensure a safe and compliant work environment.
  • Minimize downtime of critical water treatment infrastructure by conducting proactive maintenance and timely repairs, ensuring continuous and safe operation of potable water supply systems.
  • Accurately identify and resolve mechanical faults in potable water treatment systems on the first attempt by applying sound technical knowledge and troubleshooting skills, reducing repeat interventions and system disruptions.
  • Perform scheduled preventive maintenance on mechanical equipment and infrastructure to sustain optimal operating conditions and ensure compliance with potable water treatment standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Use tools, parts, and materials efficiently, minimizing waste and ensuring all maintenance tasks are performed in a clean, organized, and resource-conscious manner that supports continuous operations.
  • Ensure stakeholder satisfaction by delivering reliable mechanical work, maintaining open communication with operations staff and supervisor, meeting timelines, and addressing operational needs professionally.
  • Quickly and accurately diagnose mechanical issues using appropriate diagnostic tools and techniques, reducing fault detection time while ensuring all repairs uphold potable water safety and quality standards.
  • Regularly inspect, clean, and maintain tools and mechanical equipment to keep them in safe, hygienic, and optimal working condition, preventing failures and avoiding contamination risks in the treatment process.
  • Operate within approved budget parameters by minimizing unnecessary expenditure on tools, materials, and labour, while recommending practical, cost-effective solutions for installations and repairs within the potable water context.
  • Complete assigned mechanical tasks as specified in work orders, interpreting technical documentation correctly and ensuring all work meets potable water treatment plant standards, safety requirements, and client expectations.

Minimum Qualifications / Requirements areas

  • Grade 12 Certificate.
  • Certificate in Mechanical Fitting
  • Preferably 3 years’ experience in Mechanical Maintenance
  • Good communication skills.
  • Suitably qualified applicants must provide certificates which have been verified by the Zambia Qualifications Authority (ZAQA).
