Zambia Sugar Plc’s ultimate parent company, Associated British Foods plc (ABF) CEO Mr. George Weston, recently visited our Nakambala estate as part of his planned visits to the Southern African operations, which include Zambia, Malawi, Eswatini, South Africa, Rwanda and Tanzania.

George interacted with employees including Union leaders, offering comforting advice with candour, encouraging them to personally commit to conducting a proper risk assessment before embarking on any job. He challenged employees to always look out for one another. George toured agricultural fields and the factory to get an appreciation of the £11 million Falling Film Evaporator (FFE) project currently being commissioned. The FFE aims to improve factory throughput due to continuous operation and enhance safety. George was also pleased that the £48 million Twazabuka project was finally underway and would be completed in 2 years time.

Other agricultural projects inspected are the ongoing multi-million pounds new farming systems that include drip irrigation projects that accounted for at least four fields achieving a record yield of 200 tonnes per hectare during the farming season.

George took the opportunity to induct the teams behind this amazing performance, into the 200 tonnes per hectare Club! Although there were so many people behind this achievement, we graciously allowed the few to represent us, plus there were only so many of those cool jackets to go round!

Zambia Sugar Managing Director, Oswald Magwenzi, shared the work the Company was doing to promote local suppliers and contractors, including working with them in the renovation of the housing stock at Nakambala estate. George commended the staff and Mazabuka based contractors for this great work. The contractors were trained under Zambia Sugar Plc’s Local Supplier Development Programme working in collaboration with National Council for Construction (NCC). The programme involves training local contractors using classroom sessions followed by practical skills application through building and refurbishing of employee houses at Nakambala estate.

George remarked on the incredible transformation that had taken place at the Nakambala estate since his last visit. He commended the leadership team for the work that continues to be done. He encouraged employees to continue focusing on safety, hard work and commitment to our consumers which are all in keeping with our vision of making a safe, healthy, and respectful workplace, a beautiful estate and a diversified agribusiness which is the best at serving customers.

On his Zambia visit, George was accompanied by ABF Sugar Operations Director, Criag Jensen, ABF Sugar Health, Safety and Security Director, Clinton Lee and ABF Sugar Finance Operations Head, Neville Naidoo.v

My career foundation was built through Zambia Sugar’s prestigious Management-in-Training (MIT) programme within the Commercial department. Following this intensive rotational experience and a subsequent three-year role as a Marketing and Sales Analyst, I proactively pursued growth beyond my core responsibilities. This included contributing to the 2022 Illovo Millennial Board, where we developed strategies to embed transformative Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DE&I) culture across the business.

This initiative led me to my current role as a Results Delivery Analyst in Business Improvement. Here, I leverage cross-functional collaboration to drive performance initiatives throughout Zambia Sugar. During challenges, I rely on intentionally built support networks for resilience. Outside work, I express creativity through DIY arts and crafts.

Guided by the conviction that “Tomorrow is never promised,” I strive daily to maximize my potential and contribute meaningfully.

Zambia Sugar joined the global community in commemorating World Environment Day, observed annually on 5 June. This year’s theme, “Ending Plastic Pollution,” highlights the urgent need to address one of the most critical environmental challenges of our time. Each year, millions of tonnes of plastic waste enter natural ecosystems, harming wildlife, polluting water sources, and accelerating climate change. The campaign calls for collective action to reduce plastic consumption and implement sustainable practices that support a cleaner, healthier planet for future generations.

As part of our commitment to reducing plastic waste across our operations and supply chain, Zambia Sugar has implemented a range of initiatives, including green procurement practices, promotion of a circular economy, provision of waste segregation facilities, and community clean-up and awareness campaigns, among others.

To mark this important occasion, Zambia Sugar, in collaboration with other partners, participated in a commemoration event held in Lusaka, a city where the effects of plastic pollution are particularly pronounced.

Ending plastic pollution is not just a global goal, it’s a responsibility we all share.

We marked a momentous day at Nakambala, proudly hosting and sponsoring the inaugural Graduation Ceremony under our noval Supplier Development Programme

Our Managing Director, Mr. Oswald Magwenzi, congratulated the students that graduated in various trades including brick laying, plumbing, artisan electricians. These included 96 students who were awarded certification after completing training by the National Council for Construction (NCC) through a partnership under the Programme.

Offering a moving keynote address Mr Magwenzi, encouraged the graduates never to sell themselves short and instead continue to be the best they could be! He reaffirmed the Company’s commitment to its Vision and mission emphasizing our Social Development Agenda aimed at enhancing lives of our employees and the larger community. He pledged the Company’s continued commitment to being a good neighbour in the community and a responsible corporate citizen.

Among the graduates were individuals from 21 local contractors as well as those who had been contracted by Zambia Sugar a few years ago with support from the International Labour Organization-ILO, under the Lubombo Road Project focusing on developing road design methods that resulted development of road construction technologies for a resilient road ideal for rural communities.

Speaking during the graduation ceremony held at Nakambala House in Mazabuka, Wednesday, our Estates Support Services Director, Collins Phiri, commended the programme partners and students for the hard work and the programme’s unique approach of focusing on practical application which was gained on the houses that the Company is investing close to K300 million in renovating for its employees, beginning with the entry level ones. With a target of 700 houses, 46 houses have already been refurbished, while 150 more were yet to undergo renovation this year.

At the same event, NCC Executive Director, Professor Paul Makasa, highlighted the uniqueness of the tailor-made courses aimed at bridging the gap between academia and industry. Prof. Makasa commended Zambia Sugar for the initiative.

International Labour Organization (ILO) Zambia Director, Mr. Wellington Chibebe, noted that the construction sector remains key in improving infrastructure to achieve effective delivery in our water, health and education sectors.

The graduation ceremony was also attended by several government officials, including the Mazabuka Municipal Council Town Clerk, Mrs Judith Mukwita Maambo who commended Zambia Sugar for upskilling the local contractors stating that this would positively impact the whole province and country in general especially that many Constituency Development Fund (CDF) Projects currently underway required local contractors with good practical skills.

Congratulations to all the graduates – don’t sell yourself short! We believe in your potential to achieve great things!

Today, Zambia Sugar joins the global community in celebrating the vital role of employee safety on World Day for Safety and Health at Work. This year’s theme, “Revolutionizing Health and Safety – The Role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Digitalization at Work,” is being commemorated in Kalumbila, North Western Province of Zambia.

Given the potential hazards in many industries and the constant advancements in technology, a proactive focus on safety is essential. Our established safety record and recognized leadership in prioritizing the safety of our employees, visitors, and contractors resulted in our invitation to the organizing committee for this significant event, hosted by the Ministry of Labour and Social.

Attending this important event allows us to demonstrate their AI and digitalization systems designed to reduce injury risks and ensure the safe return of all employees. It also presents an opportunity to network and benchmark against global best practices in occupational health and safety for ongoing enhancement.
